What happens after a Hurricane destroys most of your living arrangements? For human recovery and assistance, there are options for housing most of the time. However, when you have dogs or other pets and you need to find a place to live it is almost impossible to find adequate housing for you and your pet. You may find it, but the days may be limited and your arrangements may not be as cozy as you would wish them to be. To make matters worse, if your pet has “special needs”, maybe from being abused, it would be quite impossible to find housing that is offered. If your pet is very sensitive around other people because of their previous trauma, the living arrangements would have to be somewhat private so that your pet could thrive
In the case of hurricane Michael and the Panhandle, we were able to assist a young lady who had two beautiful dogs. I got the wonderful chance to meet them both. Unfortunately, one of the dogs had been previously abused and it took it a few days for it to get used to me. Finally, the dog came up to me with a skittish walk and gave me a sniff on my hand. Even after the dog got use to me he still proceeded with caution each and every day.
Most homeless shelters won’t take service dogs. If a person is homeless and has pets they can forget about getting a bed. It is almost a miracle of God if a homeless shelter does take a service dog. We at the Homeless Voice and the COSAC Shelters have taken most pets that have come our way and have even rescued a few. We felt, that if a Homeless Person while on the street still had their loving pet and was still taking care of it, than that homeless person should be able to keep their best friend. So beds were created for these little loving creatures that God had put on this earth.
We were so honored to be able to provide free housing for the owner of the dogs who has asked to remain anonymous. We just bought a new low income motel. We are not open as of now, but as we always do, we took the chance and was able to take care of her and her little pets. What an honor to be able to do this and we appreciate the donors for giving us the funds we need to be able to take care of not only Homeless people, but also to take care of the little homeless pets.
Help us help those in need, and help us take care of these little animals.
